A Wholesome Life is a Good Life!

Living the good life by doing a good job and surrounding yourself with good people. That what this month’s wholesome blog is all about.

Feel Good. Be Good. Do Good.

Monumental Enthusiasm

Living the good life. A good life is a meaningful life.

What makes a life meaningful?

Our lives become meaningful when we identify ourselves with larger-than-ourself goals.

Our lives become meaningful when we make a difference in other peoples’ lives.

If you desire to make your own life more meaningful, you will need to find a way to make a difference in other people’s lives. How could you make a difference?

“It is high time the ideal of success should be replaced with the ideal of service.”

Albert Einstein

Doing good by being good.

Small acts of kindness and generosity have a positive effect on our immediate environment and community. Being kind and good, inspires others to do more of the same. (The Butterfly Effect). We lead by example, just as Ghandi said:”You must be the change you seek in the world.” You make the world a better place by being a good human being.

But what if you want to take it a step further? How could you make the biggest impact?

What if you want to DO more with your life? What if you want to utilise your life to make the world a better place?

Doing good to feel good.

The next step is about being generous with our time and money to do the most good we can.

Charitable giving doesn’t automatically make us happy. The way we give matters too. Charitable opportunities that make us feel more connected to others, and where we can see the impact of our generosity, tend to give the biggest emotional boost. The act of giving will make you happier, so be more generous for your own good!

I have been a professional ‘helper’ my entire life. I have made many successful career moves, but the one common thread has always been ‘in service’ of humankind. From massage therapy to serving a healthful meal a mile high on expensive china in a private jet. I have seen many colleagues overextend themselves, so I want to interject a kind word of caution here. You need to take care of yourself first. You should never help others at the expense of your own wellbeing. You are doing yourself and the people around you an incredible disservice. You’re not helping anyone when you’re depleting yourself. “Helping behavior” can actually become detrimental to your own physical and mental health if it is not balanced. When you start feeling drained, bitter and taken for granted – you have overextended yourself. Helping others should never feel like a burden or duty.  An act of kindness should be done freely and autonomously, never pressured.

Do you want to make an impact on humans’ quality of living, or save lives altogether? Will you focus on helping disadvantaged people in your community, country or a 3rd world country on the other side of the globe? What cause are you most passionate about?

Doing good or earning to give?

When donating money isn’t within your current financial reach, you could choose to donate your time and energy instead. How do you want to use your time?

You have an average of 40 hours per week, 50 weeks a year, for about 40 years you’ll be spending on the job. That’s 80,000 hours in an average career. Since time is your most valuable asset… your career choice could be considered one of the most important decisions you will ever make. How about utilising your career to do good?! How about working towards improving humanity one day at a time?! How could you dedicate your time to benefit mankind and/or planet earth?

Instead of donating money to charity you could dedicate your profession to making a difference. That’s radical goodness! How could you use those 80,000 hours (or a percentage of it) to do the most amount of good? 800000hours.org is a non-profit organisation created just to help you figure out how to improve your impact through your career. Check it out!

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

Albert Einstein

Giving from the heart

Doing good by being of service.

Most people who want to make a difference naturally gravitate towards the ‘helper’ and service oriented professions. A helping profession (nurse, physician, therapist) might feel the most rewarding, but it might not actually be the most impactful. There are numerous careers that can help indirectly by making a significant impact. Advocacy (politics, policies, journalism, media, managers at influential companies) and research for example can make a huge impact.

A fulfilling dream job should be a position you excel at while helping others. As we have covered before, a profession needs to be engaging to be fulfilling. It needs to fit your strengths and interests. Chances are if you pick a career because it does the most amount of good, but you’re not good at it or not interested in the day to day tasks – you will grow bored, frustrated, or burn out. The key to making a sustainable difference is to find a career that you’re good at and does good simultaneously. The book 80,000 Hours: Find a Fulfilling Career that does Good, by Benjamin Todd, gives several examples of freshly graduated students who choose to go work on wall street to donate half their income to charities. These graduates realised they could do more good by making more money, then become a doctor for example!

In trying to figure out what career would be the best fit for you, the organisation suggests you look at what problems are most pressing first. Figure out what could be the best approach to help solve them second. Then you look at what professions within that approach you would excel at.  Most successful people in a field achieve far more than the typical person, so choose something where you have the potential to excel. Don’t do something you won’t enjoy in order to have more impact, it won’t be worth your sacrifice. Regardless of the impact you are trying to make, in order to be effective you need to simultaneously enjoy the actual job and excel at it!

        1. What are the most pressing issues?
        2. What’s the most effective approach to try and solve it this decade?
        3. What talents do I have that could assist in that approach?
        4. What job would I be or become good at with my current skill level?

It would be an incredibly fortunate match if the job you love also happens to make the most impact. It is highly unlikely that the best career for you personally is also the one that most benefits the world. You’ll need to compromise and weigh your own talents, values and priorities against the difference you want to make in other people’s lives.

Look for best option in combination of how pressing the problem is, how large your contribution will be, and the degree of personal fit into your wholesome life.

“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”

Mother Teresa

Good people.

Altruism boosts happiness by aligning one’s life with one’s values. Being altruistic gives you clarity, purpose and fulfilment. As we have discovered, being kind, being social, being generous and helpful makes us feel better. It makes you a happy, healthy and good person. It makes you the kind of person people want to spend time with! The effective altruism community attracts good people. Community is key to your success. This might just be that new circle of friends and colleagues you have been looking for…

“The degree of loving is measured by the degree of giving.”

Edwin Louis Cole

Giving from the heart

Good job!

An ordinary work environment is often undermined by bad management styles or detrimental office politics. In a normal network, individuals are usually pursuing projects of their own while competing with their colleagues for results. Collaboration is not always evident. Through coaching (mainly the managers) we can enhance the work culture and productivity through cooperation and teamwork.

Effective Altruism cancels out competitiveness naturally. Everyone within that community shares the same goal: to help others as much as possible. When you help a colleague to make an even bigger impact, you increase your own impact as well and you both succeed! You improve your own reputation by supporting your colleagues in being more effective. When you are helpful, others will want to help you in return. Altruism creates a community that supports one another in helping others. When you combine individuals’ strengths you can accomplish far more as a team than as an individual. Altruism organically grows the healthy work environment we all aspire!

By working together, we can end extreme global poverty and factory farming – in our lifetime! We can safeguard the future of our planet and mankind, while having a fulfilling career. We can enjoy a meaningful life through a fulfilling career within a supportive community. It’s a WIN WIN WIN! Feel good, be good, and do good to make the world a better place for all.

Share the Love

Remember, an act of kindness or generosity should always make you feel better. When it makes you feel depleted, remind yourself not to overextend before you burn out. Never give at your own expense. Take care of yourself first.  You’ve earned it! Flight attendants remind you all the time to don your own oxygen mask first before assisting others. Give yourself room to breathe. Be kind and generous with yourself, first. When you feel good, you will naturally want to do good. Your cup of goodness will spill over and make the world a better place for all.
